The director of the Technical Office is appointed by the Plenary of the General Council of the Judiciary, at the binding proposal of the President of the Supreme Court, from those candidates who can demonstrate they fulfil the legal requirements to obtain the category of Magistrate-Judge of the Supreme Court.

For purposes of representation, the director will be afforded the status of Magistrate of the Supreme Court while he or she holds the position.

The current Director of the Technical Office is the Honourable Mr Juan Manuel San Cristóbal Villanueva.
