Ordinary Chambers - First Chamber - Duties

The Civil Law Chamber of the Supreme Court shall hear (Art. 56 of the LOPJ):

1st The appeals, reviews and other extraordinary civil matters established by the Law.

2nd Civil liability claims for acts committed in the exercise of office which may be directed against the Prime Minister, the Presidents of the Congress and the Senate, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and the General Council of Judicial Power, the Chairman of the Constitutional Court, members of the Government, Representatives and Senators, members of the General Council of Judicial Power, Judges of the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Court, Chairmen of the National Criminal Court and any of its Chambers and the High Courts of Justice, the Attorney General, Prosecutors from the Chamber of the Supreme Court, the Chairman and Trustees of the Court of Auditors, the Chairman and Trustees of the State Council, the Public Defender's Office and the President and Councillors of an Autonomous Community, when so determined by the Statute of Autonomy.

3rd Any civil liability claims directed against Judges of the High Court or the High Courts of Justice for acts performed in the exercise of their duties.

In addition to the powers attributed to the Civil and Criminal Chambers of the Supreme Court in articles 56 and 57, said Chambers will have knowledge of the processing and development of the civil and criminal proceedings, respectively, against the Queen consort or the consort of the Queen, the Princess or Prince of Asturias and his consort, and against the abdicated King or Queen and their consort. (Article 55 bis of the LOPJ).
