The Judicial Statistics Division

It is connected to the Inspection Department. Its duties are regulated by the Judicial Statistics Regulations, 1/2003 of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ), and, according to article 15 of Law 12/1989, of 9 May 1989, on the Public Statistics Function, it has the status of statistical service.

The Statistics Division is responsible for the design and maintenance of the computer system for the collection of quarterly statistical bulletins, for monitoring the collection and validation thereof, for the consultation system and statistical reports available on the CGPJ Intranet and on the Judicial Internet Exchange Point, and for drawing up a wide range of quarterly and annual reports. It is also responsible for the statistics section available on the CGPJ website.

Quarterly bulletins from the courts are stored in the Judicial Statistics Database and used to generate reports and specific questions for the work of the General Council of the Judiciary Inspection Department and the Presidents of the High Courts of Justice in their role as inspectors. They also offer a summary of each court’s workload, aggregated at the various territorial levels, to enable the courts to conduct self-assessments and to provide information to authorities with competence in the media serving the judicial administration. This database is also used to produce Judicial Activity Statistics included in the National Statistics Plan and the Inventory of Statistical Operations (with code 71002).

The Judicial Statistics Division provides technical support to the Inspection Department and to the technical bodies of the General Council of the Judiciary on request.

It collaborates with the National Commission for Judicial Statistics as a technical body, coordinating with the National Statistics Institute and with the Higher Statistics Council.

On an international level, the Division collaborates with the Spanish representative in the Commission for the Evaluation of the Justice System (CEPEJ) of the European Council and in the development and preparation of its biennial report and of the EU Justice Scoreboard. It also collaborates in the Ibero-American Plan for Judicial Statistics.
